About dot grid paper

Dot grid paper keeps the structure of graph paper without the visual noise. The dots give you something to line things up against, then fade away once you start writing or drawing, which is why it is so popular for bullet journals, sketchnotes and hand lettering.

The usual spacing is 5 mm in metric countries and 1/4 inch in the US, and both are presets here. You can go finer (down to 2 mm) or wider, swap the dots for small crosses, and emphasise every fifth dot to give your layouts a rhythm.

The page is drawn as vector dots, so they stay round and evenly spaced at any print size and in the PDF.

What you can use it for

  • Bullet journals, habit trackers and planners
  • Sketching, wireframing and diagrams
  • Hand lettering and calligraphy layout
  • Technical sketches that need light guides
  • Notes that mix text and drawings

The options explained

  • Dot spacing. Distance between neighbouring dots. 5 mm and 1/4 inch are the most common.
  • Mark shape. Round dots or small plus-shaped crosses. Crosses are easier to see in scans.
  • Mark size. Diameter in points. 1 pt is subtle and 1.5 pt is easier to see.
  • Larger mark every. Makes every Nth dot bigger so you can count out sections of the page quickly.
  • Color. A mid grey keeps dots visible but unobtrusive. Pick a lighter shade if you use fine pens.

Printing tips

  • Use the Paper tint option for a cream or pale blue page, or print on lightly tinted stock for a softer look.
  • Dots print best with the printer set to normal or high quality.
  • For a bullet journal page, try 5 mm spacing with a larger dot at every fifth position.

Frequently asked questions

What spacing is used for bullet journals?

Most dotted notebooks use 5 mm spacing. Many US notebooks use a similar 1/4 inch (6.35 mm). Both are one-click presets.

Will the dots show up when I photocopy or scan the page?

The dots are intentionally faint. If you plan to copy or scan, raise the mark size to 1.5 pt or darken the colour.

Can I print dot grid on A5 for a notebook?

Yes. Choose A5 or A6 and a smaller margin. You can also print two A5 sheets side by side on one A4 page with your printer's pages-per-sheet option.

Is there a limit on the number of dots?

Spacing starts at 2 mm. On large sheets that means tens of thousands of dots, which the generator handles, but the PDF will be a larger file.
